La Città Morta is a five act tragedy written by Italian aesthete/decadent, poet, playwright, orator, journalist and soldier, d'Annunzio for Sarah Bernhardt. It is the story of Alessandro, an archaeologist, his blind wife Anna, Alessandro's friend, Leonardo - a poet, and Bianca Maria, Leonardo's sister during a visit to the ruins of Mycenae - in Greece. Alessandro falls in love with Bianca Maria, and Leonardo, discovering his own incestuous love for Bianca Maria, drowns her to preserve her purity. His despicable act is discovered by Alessandro when he helps Leonardo move the body, and then both men are discovered with the body by Anna, who has just recovered her sight.

The world premiere of the play took place at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris in January 1898 in a French translation, with Sarah Bernhardt in the role of Anna. The Italian premiere took place at the Teatro Lirico on 21 March 1901 with Eleonora Duse playing Anna.

A scarce playscript of a famous 19th century Italian tragedy bound in an exquisite Arts & Crafts binding in the style of the Doves Bindery.

OCLC locates one copy at the University and City library of Köln, while COPAC locates six copies - all in the UK.

A near fine copy with a hint of wear at the head of the front joint and a very small trace of rubbing to the bands.
