Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1903. First Edition. 12mo (4¼" x 7¾"). pp. 280. IN ORIGINAL DUST JACKET.

Signed binding design by the Decorative Designers of a Maidenhair fern (Adiantum raddianum) in light green and black on dark green cloth. The original tan paper dust jacket is printed in green with the titles on the front and spine panels, and advertisements on the rear panel.

A collection of nature essays in the vein of Thoreau, Muir and Burroughs. Torrey was an ornithologist and naturalist, and was among Houghton and Mifflin Company's most popular of the travel and "outdoor" writers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Other outdoor writers then writing for Houghton Mifflin include H. D. Thoreau, John Burroughs, and John Muir.)

A near fine copy with off-setting from the dust-jacket to the eps.

The good dust jacket is heavily chipped at the top of the front panel and at the head and foot of the spine panel; a split between the spine panel and rear panel, and faint ring marks to the front panel.
