12 mo. (7 1/2” x 5"). 56 leaves. An autograph album bound in black calf with a pressed fanfare design on both boards and the spine. The word "Album" is stamped in gilt on one end of the spine. Cream and blue pages, a.e.g.
A commonplace book of contemporary and classical poetry about friendship and the impending loss of a friend in a fair, copperplate hand. The title page has an illustration of a sail with the initials S. B. W. and 1836 and a flag of of the mast that reads "Adieu God Bless You and Protect You".
Based on the poetry contained in the book, it was created as a parting gift between for a friend who was leaving or moving away from the transcriber.
A marvelous example of early 19th century copperplate script and a very personal example of a 19th century parting gift between friends.
A good+ binding with wear to the extremities and chipping to the leather at the head of the spine on the rear board; a 2¾” start at the head of the front joint and 2?” start at the foot. The text block is near fine. The book was upside-down when the transcription began, so the word "Album" is inverted on the lower spine.
