Unsigned Hugh Thomson binding design in gold on pale purple cloth with the central titles surrounded by a laurel wreath, which is in turn surrounded by a dozen fans of varying sizes, connected to one another with laurel swags; at the foot of the design are the primary characters of the play facing each other: Charles Surface and Maria facing Lady Sneerwell and Joseph Surface; design border of curled ribbons and fans; t.e.g.The original box repeats the cover design in brown.
Includes pictorial title, color frontispiece and twenty-four additional tipped-in color plates with caption as well as illustrative gold ribbon and fan framing on the mounts.
