Unsigned Hugh Thomson binding design in gold on pale purple cloth with the central titles surrounded by a laurel wreath, which is in turn surrounded by a dozen fans of varying sizes, connected to one another with laurel swags; at the foot of the design are the primary characters of the play facing each other: Charles Surface and Maria facing Lady Sneerwell and Joseph Surface; design border of curled ribbons and fans; t.e.g.The original box repeats the cover design in brown.

Includes pictorial title, color frontispiece and twenty-four additional tipped-in color plates with caption as well as illustrative gold ribbon and fan framing on the mounts.

Black and white text illustrations throughout the text.Sheridan's comedy of manners satirizing the affectation and pretentiousness of 18th century English society. It was first performed in 1777 and first published in 1780.

A fine copy of this Hugh Thomson illustrative extravaganza. The near fine box has slight toning to the edges. Exceptionally scarce in this condition and in the rare original box.
