Book Condition: Very good

16mo (6¼” x 3 ”). pp.155. Unsigned binding of publisher's diced cloth. The third Knapp edition of the Memoir and Poems by Wheatley, and first Knapp edition of Horton's Poems by a Slave.

Frontispiece portrait of Phillis Wheatley signed: Pendleton [i.e. William S. Pendleton], Boston; Boston. Light & Horton. Please note that the text block has been professionally restored (first two signatures reattached to the text block and a facsimile title page added).

Please note that 200 copies of the 1838 edition were reissued in 1864 with gathering 3 (p. 25-[36]) reprinted to fill in for some missing pages. The 1838 issue can be distinguished from the 1864 reissue by looking at p.36 in gathering 3: in the present original 1838 issue, p. [36] is blank, whereas in the 1864 reissue, p. [36] has a note that is printed on p. 34-35 of the original issue. (AAS 244798).

Phillis Wheatley was the first African American and second American woman (after Anne Bradstreet) to publish a book of poems. George Moses Horton, was the first black author in the South to publish a book, as well as the only American to publish a book while living in slavery.

In 1829, Horton's first collection of poems was published as "The Hope of Liberty" (Raleigh: J. Gales & Son, 1829), which was republished in Philadelphia as "Poems by a Slave" in 1837 (no publication information on any available copies), and added to the present book in 1838. As the 1837 edition has always been vanishingly scarce, the present Knapp 1838 edition is considered the first obtainable edition.

A very good copy whose text block has been professionally restored (first two signatures reattached to the text block and a facsimile title page added); a 1901 auction catalogue entry tipped onto the front pastedown; the binding has wrinkling to the cloth, heavy soil, heavy rubbing to the corners and the cloth shows a few small holes from rubbing and use; the spine label has perished, and the fore edge of the first two signatures show rubbing and chipping from use. Protected by a custom cloth slipcase.
