8vo (5½”x 8¼”). 2 volumes. Holiday Illustrated Library edition. Vol. I: pp. 292; Vol. II: pp. 275.

Unsigned binding design attributed to Lee Thayer in two tones of textured gold on black fine diagonally ribbed cloth. The cover design is repeated on the rear board with the Brentano's initial "B" formed from the foliate motifs on the cartouche in place of the titles; t.e.g.

Includes an engraved frontis. in each volume, and fifty additional engraved and photogravure full page, chapter head and chapter tail illustrations by George W. Brenneman. The engraving was completed by G. M. Deschamps, were printed under the direction of G. W. H. Ritchie.

First published in 1877, The First Violin is the author's first published novel that tells the story of May Wedderburn, an English woman who escapes marriage by traveling to Germany to study music, where, after various adventures, she meets and falls in love with Eugen Courvoisier, the first violin player in an important orchestra.

An instant hit when published, and still popular enough 20 years later to issue this first illustrated edition. John Lehner attributes this binding design to Lee Thayer for the Decorative Designers.

A near fine set with offsetting on the eps. from the now missing dust jackets. This extraordinarily scarce Lee Thayer binding design is rarely seen in this condition.
