Price: $1,125.00

Quantity: 1 available

Book Condition: fine

A collection of twenty-five 5" x 8" botanical paintings in watercolor on watermarked (Montgolfier & Canson) paper. The majority of the paintings are on grey or grey-brown paper, with two paintings on ecru paper and one on pink paper. The set of paintings were housed in a folder (5 " x 8 ”) made of folded aquarelle paper of the same type used for the watercolors; the title "Twenty Five North American | Wild Flowers" is written in script on the upper right corner of the front panel.

Each painting has an accompanying manuscript description on white writing paper that includes the botanical and common names, the size of the flower, the time of the year it may be found as well as a full written description of appearance and habit.

The paintings are ordered from 1 to 25 based on the flowers' appearance during the year, starting with the Wind Flower (Anemone nemorosa) in April - May, and ending with Witch-Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) in November - December.

As the paintings are of wild flowers native to the northeastern United States, it is likely that the artist was established there. Based on the paper and on the appearance of the written descriptions, it is also likely that this group of paintings dates to the late 19th or early 20th century.

The content of the written descriptions indicates that the artist was an amateur botanist, but one with a high level of technical proficiency in the representation of plants and flowers in this collection.

It is likely that the artist was a woman, given the fact that most amateur botanists of this period were women who had developed a high level of skill as botanical artists, but rarely published their work - instead they would paint for personal fulfillment and at the most might have shared their work with a small circle of family and friends. We have been unable to find any evidence of publication.

A fine set. The original paper folder is still extant, but the two halves are detached at the fold, with toning and chipping to the edges of both the front and rear panels.
