Thoreau's chronicle of his excursion along this stretch of Massachusetts coastline in which he reflects on the complex relationship between sea and shore.

Considered one of the great photographic interpreters of Thoreau, Johnson viewed photography in similar terms to painting and composed his photographs in that fashion -- focusing on the usual, the everyday, and perhaps even the mundane, which he turned into a visual poetry.

A very good + copy with light offsetting and foxing to the front pastedown and free endpaper; a touch of dulling to the gilt on the spine.
