The story of Maggie, a plain, uneducated girl of 19 who initially lives with her father - a country clergyman, but when her father dies, Maggie moves to London to live with her aunt. Once in London, Maggie is narrowly restricted (one of "The Captives" of the title) by the religious sect in which her aunt belongs to - and tries to escape with Martin Warlock, the love of her life, but events conspire to make her escape impossible. Maggie instead marries an English clergyman and is again held captive in a loveless marriage.
