12mo (4 3/4” x 7 1/4”). pp. 261. Unsigned Whitman binding design of a historic Japanese Mon in red on black cloth with titles in Mrs. Whitman's rustic sans serif font in gold; t.e.g.

Noto is the mountainous peninsula and province on the west coast of Hondo, the main island of Japan. This is the story of Mr. Lowell's trip to Noto through the plains, mountains and the inland sea of Japan by train and jinrikisha.

Although at least one reference calls this design a lotus flower, this image is Mrs. Whitman's interpretation of a historic mandarin-orange flower, or Tachibana (Citrus tachibana) Mon.

A near fine copy with slight rubbing to the extremities. A near fine Whitman binding, and exceptionally scarce in this condition.
