First Edition. First printing. 8vo (6¾” x 9¼”). pp. 126.

Unsigned binding design by Sarah Wyman Whitman in gold on bright green cloth of five upright wild roses (Rosa acicularis) with stylized stems and leaves terminating in interlinked hearts at their base on woven green cloth, with titles in a banner laying over the stems. Binding design repeats in gold on rear cover. Spine with titles and a flower bud with stylized stem and leaves in gold; t.e.g.

Includes color frontis.,11 full page chromolithographic color illustrations, (each with captioned tissue guard) as well as title page, half-title and chapter head decorations after watercolor paintings by American Impressionist Childe Hassam.

Collected not only for Sarah Wyman Whitman's breathtaking binding design and Hassam's stunning artwork, An Island Garden is also important to the history of chromolithography. The chromolithographic process used to recreate the nuances of Hassam's illustrations was thought to require up to 30 stones, so the book is also collected for its place in chromolithographic printing history.

A near fine copy with faint darkening to the spine that does not affect the gold decorations, and a few faint instances of foxing on the eps. Exceptionally scarce in this condition.
