4to (6 ”x 9 ”). pp. 225. Unsigned binding design by Lee Thayer in gold on fine vertically ribbed olive cloth of the titles and a series of stylized waterlilies. Titles in gold on the spine with a single instance of the waterlily motif. Includes frontis. and 15 additional sepia-toned photogravures after photographs by Arthur Scott, each with captioned tissue guard. Adam's expression of delight in nature as seen in the Berkshires, which is imbued with feeling for the people and places of Western Massachusetts. An ingenious binding design by Thayer, which shows a series of stylized waterlilies with knotted stems rising from buds at the foot of the design through the "water" within a "shell", which opens when the waterlilies reach the top of the design; Thayer places the viewer underwater as the waterlilies rise to the surface. A very good + copy with a contemporary gift inscription in pencil on the ffep; with slight dulling to the spine and faint rubbing; original ribbon marker present but detached. Scarce. TBR 1:9.
