D8vo (5¾” x 8¼”). pp. 239. Limited edition. 1 of 1000 copies on handmade paper. Volume V of the First Collected Edition, and issued individually as part of a set. Unsigned binding design by Charles Ricketts in gold on white buckram of the titles and three Japanese Mon-like circles, with one containing a bird escaping through prison bars, the second containing the freed bird, and the third containing ocean waves and a star. Titles in gold on the spine. Handmade paper with deckled edges; t.e.g. The text for the First Collected Edition of Wilde's works was taken in most instances from the last editions that were under the supervision of the author, in this case, the Leonard Smithers 1899 edition of An Ideal Husband. The Charles Rickett's binding design was first used on Methuen's 1905 limited edition of De Profundis. The First Collected Edition remains authoritative to this day and is one of the more lasting tributes to Wilde's memory. A very good + copy of this important edition of An Ideal Husband with the book plate of historian and novelist Paul Horgan (1903 - 1995), a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for history on the front pastedown; slight tanning to the spine; Internally near fine. Exceptionally scarce. Mason (Millard) 429.
