8vo (5 ” x 8¼”). pp. 336. Three-quarters red morocco over red linen with single rule gold borders. Spine with five gold pointelle decorated raised bands and six compartments with titles and central clover motifs surrounded by double ruled borders all in gold; marbled grey endpapers, t.e.g. Includes 69 illustrations after John Tenniel engraved on wood by the Brothers Dalziel with 4 wood engraved plates and 1 color plate of full page Persian designs after Sulman. Lalla Rookh consists of four narrative poems with a connecting tale in prose that describe a princess’s trip from Delhi to Cashmere to meet her betrothed. Along the way, a poet (her husband-to-be in disguise) recounts to her historical tales of insurrection and ecstasy, of revolutionary heroes and passionate women. Originally published with these illustrations in 1861 and reprinted in 1886, "Mr. Tenniel's Illustrated 'Lalla Rookh' "1 was Tenniel's principal achievement in illustration prior to Alice in Wonderland; and with the color ornamental plate, a fine example of high Victorian taste. An unusual binder's mark depicting a bee on the verso of the ffep in the top corner. A near fine copy with a gift inscription on the front fly with offsetting of the inscription and toning to the half-title, and toning to final page. Scarce either in the first printing or in this later printing.
