8vo (5½” x 7¾”). pp. v; 115; 7 plates. Signed Margaret Armstrong binding design of 21 tulips in red, yellow and green and titles in gold on white buckram with the tulip motif repeated 4 times on the spine with titles. Signed Margaret Armstrong title page and five different Margaret Armstrong decorative borders in rose and pale green repeated throughout. Each volume contains full page black and white plates by Coburn and vignette illustrations on the verso of each textual page. Decorated eps with a repeating design of smoking pipes, wine goblets and a covered pitcher. t.e.g. This Armstrong masterwork appeared in two cloth variants: red buckram with a line block of the decoration in gold, and this white buckram with the design in gold, green, yellow and red. Although the line block of the red variant is of the same design as the white variant, the use of the white cloth and color creates a completely different appearance to the design. A stunning set of what Gullans and Espy regarded as "among her [Armstrong's] finest works", even if the white variant "is subject to instant destruction at the touch of careless hands." Both binding variants are exceptionally scarce. A very good copy with light soiling to the rear board; spine with toning and fading to the spine (the spine designs and text are still clearly legible) and a brown staining to the lower front edge; some light staining to the lower front edge of the spine; the gutter shows toned tide marks at the front fly, p.29, p.33, p.51 and p.89 with light foxing from the moisture exposure on the verso and margins of the pages preceding the noted pages; The moisture exposure has caused the gutter portion of the front fly to adhere to the verso of the frontis.; moderate foxing to the frontis margins; Original ribbon marker not present.
