Robert Henry Thurston (1839 – 1903) An American engineer, he was the first Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology and the first president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In 1885 he became the director of Sibley College at Cornell University and reorganized it as a college of mechanical engineering, now known as the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
