8vo (5¾" x 8½"). 2 volumes. Vol. I: 475; Vol. 2: 492; An unsigned Art Nouveau binding with a card onlay decorated with a design of white tulips with pink tinting and green intertwining stems outlined in gold and leaves on a dark blue background with a single rule gold border. The onlay was colored to match the smooth, dark blue cloth of the actual binding to give the illusion of the design being on the cloth itself; t.e.g. Includes color frontis. and a line drawing by Merrill in each volume, and a total of 6 photogravure illustrations, each with a captioned tissue guard. An exceptionally scarce Art Nouveau binding. The presence of the paper onlay explains the rarity of this set, as it is likely that few of the paper onlays survived intact with regular wear, and it also explains the unique pink tinting of the tulips which would have been more difficult to achieve on cloth. A near fine copy of this unique Art Nouveau binding with the contemporary ownership mark of Sine .I Johnson on both ffeps; the later detached bookplates of H. L. Marshall laid in each volume with shadows of the glue used for the bookplates evident on the ffep, and offset in both volumes to the fly leaf. Exceptionally scarce.
