Includes frontis. and 35 additional black and white illustrations by Madeleine Lemaire; t.e.g. Originally published in French to immediate success in 1882, L'Abbé Constantin is the story of the good Abbé Constantin, his nephew, the American heiress the nephew falls in love with, and how the heiress overcame the nephew's difficulty with her wealth. Issued in a green and maroon variant, this binding design was on Crowell's reprinting of both the present book and of Theuriet's The Abbé Daniel. A masterwork of publisher's decorative cloth thought to be either by Bruce Rogers (Lehner) or Lee Thayer (Minsky). Based on the design elements, Austin Abbey Rare Books is doubtful that it is either, but would lean toward Thayer if pressed. PBO.pba02927.bib; Minsky I:98; UNCG 1895 HAL. A near fine copy with the gift plate of Theophilus Hope D'Estrella on the front pastedown and gift inscription to D'Estrella from the San Francisco Forum Club on the ffep. Scarce. Theophilus Hope D'Estrella was the first student enrolled in the California School for the Deaf at Berkeley, and became known primarily as an accomplished photographer and painter. He was an instructor at the California School for the Deaf; his most successful student, Granville Redmond, distinguished himself as a landscape painter in Southern California.
