12mo (4 ” x 6¾”). pp. 166. Unsigned Art Nouveau binding design of poppy flowers, buds, leaves and stems in gold on vertically ribbed maroon cloth. Includes frontis. and 35 additional black and white illustrations by Madeleine Lemaire; t.e.g.

Originally published in French to immediate success in 1882, L'Abbé Constantin is the story of the good Abbé Constantin, his nephew, the American heiress the nephew falls in love with, and how the heiress overcame the nephew's difficulty with her wealth.

A masterwork of publisher's decorative cloth thought to be either by Bruce Rogers (Lehner) or Lee Thayer (Minsky). Based on the design elements, Austin Abbey Rare Books is doubtful that it is either, but would lean toward Thayer if pressed.

A near fine copy with the gift plate of Theophilus Hope D'Estrella on the front pastedown and gift inscription to D'Estrella from the San Francisco Forum Club on the ffep. Scarce.
