Mottled calf; spine with red morocco title label, 5 gilt fleurons and 5 dividers of a single rule with pointillé work on either side. Includes frontis. illustration signed by "Scoles" (John Scoles; American, active New York, 1793–1844) and the plate "Happy Family" (opposite p.145) signed by Alexander Anderson (1775-1870; considered the first American wood engraver) among other early engravings. Also includes a recommendation by Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a strong proponent of learning for young women (see p.[v]) as well as extracts from Dr. Rush's tract, "Thoughts on Female Education" (pp. 214 - 220). Early American instruction for girls on comportment as well as selections from poems and educational tracts designed for women and girls. This new edition of the Mental Flower Garden stresses "continued female learning, the idea that women's education should be sustained into adulthood" (Eldred and Mortensen, Imagining Rhetoric: Composing Women of the Early United States), whereas the first edition, published in 1800, stresses elegance in conduct and speech. Contemporary ownership mark on front flyleaf of Ann Guest of Lansingburgh (NY). One of the book's subscribers is William Guest of Lansingburgh, presumably a near relative.
