Margaret Neilson Armstrong (1867 - 1944) was a pioneering book artist who forged a path for other women artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries into the fields of book decoration and cover design, which at that time was a profession solely occupied by men. According to Gullans and Espey, Margaret Armstrong became “the single most important woman in this branch of decorative design” after Sarah Wyman Whitman, and was a “source of inspiration and encouragement” to women who would follow in her path, notably Amy Sacker, Marion Louise Peabody, Amy Richards, Lee Thayer and Bertha Stuart. Howard Chandler Christy (1873 - 1952) was an illustrator famous for his “Christy Girl”, a society girl image similar to a “Gibson Girl”. He studied under William Merritt Chase and started his artistic career as a combat artist during the Spanish-American war. Later he moved to book and magazine line illustration and painted in his later years. In 1940, his mural “Scene at the Signing of the Constitution of the United States” was installed in the US Capitol Building and is still on display there.
