Wharton's novel satirizes the lives of the "bright young things" of the 1920s. The protagonists decide on a marriage of convenience so that they may tour Europe and live off the kindness of wealthy friends. They agree to an "open" relationship with the understanding that they will agree to a divorce if a better prospect emerges for either of them at a later date, but their feelings change. Glimpses of the Moon was thought to be a great influence on Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1923).
