Sarah de St. Prix Wyman Whitman (1842 - 1904) was a painter, writer, a gifted designer and creator of stained glass, and trailblazing in book cover designer, who studied with William Morris Hunt, Thomas Couture and John La Farge. Mrs. Whitman brought to her work a spare elegance and an Arts & Crafts sensibility that reflected the influence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, James Whistler and Japanese fabric design. By the mid-1890s, Whitman’s innovative designs were ranked with those of William Morris, Walter Crane, Elihu Vedder and Stanford White. She designed the Houghton Mifflin book pavilion for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and according to the Dictionary of National Biography is regarded as "the pioneer of modern cloth cover design".
