James Branch Cabell (1879 -1958) was an early Fantasy writer, who, at his zenith in the 1920s, was considered the greatest living American writer. Here in this series of collected essays, he uses his sparkling wit to evaluate (skewer) himself and his fellow novelists of the 1920s, including H.L. Mencken, Sinclair Lewis, Willa Cather and Frances Newman. A native and life-long resident of Richmond, Virginia, Cabell’s work was very influential on later writers of Fantasy including James Blish and Robert A. Heinlein.
