C8vo (5" x 7¾"). pp. 271 + 14 pp. publisher's catalogue. Later printing. Unsigned binding in dark brown and gold on tan woven cloth. A story of the consequences of a man's unwise marriage, resembling Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure, written in the same year.
The primary design is an likely a representation of the decorated horse's harness described on p. 202: "There were numerous brass ornaments, like coronets, on the harness...". The binding design also includes what most likely is Lord Wickenham's coat of arms, and a book of common prayer, both of which also play a part in the story.
