8vo. (8” x 6.25”). pp. [xxvi]; 390. First Edition. A stunning unsigned publisher’s binding by Charles Copeland of titles and a wolf silhouetted against the moon rendered in black and gilt on green buckram cloth; titles and vignettes of the seashore and a wolf’s head on the spine. Color frontis.with tissue guard and twelve full-page illustrations in black and white with numerous marginal illustrations as well as head and tail pieces by Charles Copeland. A beautiful copy that has seen little use. Northern Trails is a collection of nature stories based on the author’s travels in Labrador and New Foundland, and takes up the narrative of a white wolf named Wayeeses, along with stories of salmon, wild geese and polar bear. The book also contains a complete index and glossary of First Nation (native) names for the species. Although Long asserted the stories were based on fact from his observations, Theodore Roosevelt classed the book as a fairy tale along the lines of Kipling’s “Jungle Book” or London’s “Call of the Wild”, since Long’s descriptions of animal behavior were not remotely close to what Roosevelt had observed in the wild. Charles Copeland (1858–1945 ) was a 19th C. Romantic painter in both watercolor and oil, and was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Boston Society of Water Color Painters with Childe Hassam and John Singer Sargent. His illustrations in Northern Trails are a delightful detailed Arts and Crafts representation of Northern Canadian wildlife.
