Rubricated half title and title page. Includes frontis map. The author's second book and a sequel to his first South Sea narrative Typee, also based on the author's experiences in the South Pacific. After leaving the island of Nuku Hiva and the Tai P people people, the main character (based on Melville himself) ships aboard a whaling vessel that makes its way to Tahiti, after which there is a mutiny and the majority of the crew are imprisoned on Tahiti. The book gives a familiar account of the natives of Tahiti following their interaction with foreigners and missionaries. The word Omoo is a Marquesas word that means a "rover" or a person that wanders from one island to another, refering to the author and his travels between the islands. A very good copy with moderate to heavy wear at the extremities; scattered light to moderate foxing; a start to the cloth at the top of the upper rear joint and a stain to the rear board. Wright, I: 1862
