Embossed binding design in blind on brown morocco by Macdonald and Sons of dragons in corner panels with strapwork panels forming the border of a central panel decorated in its corners with sprigs of ivy. The design is repeated on the back panel. The spine has 5 raised bands and six compartments, each with a desocrative motif in blind and double rule borders on all sides. Titles in gold on the spine; red, blue, green and orange marbled eps with turndowns decorated in a gold pointille and star pattern with border stamping; binder's stamp on the verso of the ffep at the top corner; beveled edge, a.e.g. Includes over 125 engraved full page and vignette illustrations. Stoddard's reminiscences of travel in Spain and Russia, and a description of the Passion Play at Ober-Ammergan in 1880. A fine example of a late mid-century leather embossing. William L. Macdonald and Sons (Macdonald & Sons) were bookbinders in Cambridge, MA from 1860 to the turn of the century.A very good + copy with light rubbing to the extremities; exceptionally scarce with the leather binding in this condition.
