Color paper dolls, vignette and margin silhouettes by Julia Greene; frontispiece, foldout doll house plans and color paper furnature by Albert C. Mowitz. A scarce copy complete with all 9 paper dolls and clothing, Arts and Crafts style furnishings and doll house plans. One in a series of seven books by Jane Eayre Fryer whose purpose was to teach children all the domestic arts. A significant piece of piece of social and cultural history of the early 20th century, Mary Frances Housekeeper is a snapshot of family life of the time that was designed to teach the art of housekeeping to childern in a fun and entertaining way. The book is also important in how it subtly enforced racist stereotyping in its young readers through its narrative and the physical depiction of the servant doll, Lucinda, whose paper doll body is ‘comical and distorted’ (Everyday Life & Women in America c.1800-1920). Because Mary Frances Housekeeper includes cut out dolls and furnature for children to use in play, it is difficult to find an intact copy. In very good condition with light to moderate edgewear, rubbing to the edges of the paper onlay and a small (1”) area of rubbing and open tear to ffep that does not affect the designs.
