Unsigned binding design in gold on green vertically ribbed cloth of a panel created from strapwork woven into hearts at the corners, with vines woven into the strapwork of each heart and a decorative pointillé and fleuron outer border. The spine is divided into 5 compartments by 5 sets of gold double rules; the compartments contain the titles a repeat of the vine motif from the front cover in multiples. Includes over 200 pictures and illustrations reproduced here for the first time, and among these,10 portraits of Millais; in addition, there are nine of Millais' great paintings produced in photogravure on Japan paper; rubricated title pages, t.e.g. The authoritative biography of Millais written by his son. Contains the extraordinary story of Millais boyhood and an exhaustive account of the founding of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Includes letters from Queen Victoria, Lord Beaconsfield (Benjamin Disraeli), Gladstone, Du Maurier, Lord Leighton and more. A very good + set with light wear to the head and tails of both spines; internally fine.
