8vo (5 x 7). pp. 404 + 8 pp. publisher's advts. First printing. Brown publisher's cloth stamped with an arrangement of black decorated rules, a black oak branch entwined in ivy. Spine decorated with rules in red, gold and black, and a gold four-leaf clover on a red and black fillet, corresponding to BAL's binding number 1. White eps stamped with a green floral pattern Includes frontis. portrait of Alcott with facsimile inscription as well as two additional illustrations and a facsimile of Miss Alcott's writing and a facsimile of the preface to the new edition of Alcott's Modern Mephistopheles. A collection of Alcott's letters and journals, along with a brief biography by Cheney published the year following Alcott's death. Cheney was close Alcott family friend and was the sole woman lecturer in Bronson Alcott's Concord Summer School of Philosophy and Literature. The first printing with p. 44 ending in ...with Goethe. BAL 221. A very good + copy with faint rubbing to the extremities and the bookplate of Ralph Hall at St. Georges by the River on the front paste-down and the ownership stamp of Fanny Hoagland on the front fly leaf.
