8vo (6 x 8). 2 volumes in 1. Vol. 1: p. 357; 10 illustrations by F.T. Merrill. Vol. 2: pp. 342; 8 illustrations by F. T. Merrill. An unsigned Lee Thayer (Decorative Designers) binding design in gold and blue on olive green cloth of titles and a repeating pattern of peacock feather eyes, bordered by a single gold rule. Spine with tiles and a repeat of peacock motif on the spine. Published as a single volume in 1848, the novel follows the lives of Becky Sharp and Emmy Sedley and their families during and after the Napoleonic Wars. Thackeray subtitles it A Novel Without A Hero as he wanted the novel to saterize what he felt was the absence of truly moral heroes in the modern world. Near fine with some slight discoloration in spots to the rear board - otherwise a fresh, sharp copy. An exceptionally scarce Lee Thayer masterwork. TBR 15:12
