Bull of the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), flowers and buds on swirling stems in gold on green cloth; spine with titles and two poppy motifs in gold. Purple floral endpapers with a gold. A labor of love by Stanford University Professor of Horticulture Emory Evans, this beautiful book that looks at the history and influence of the California poppy on the arts and culture, through a series of articles and a collection of poetry and verse about the flower. Includes two color illustrations (frontis. and p.132), as well as many Art Nouveau decorations (including floriated initial caps, head and tail pieces) throughout, as well as period photographs and Art Nouveau drawings from artists such as Florence Lundborg, Marion Taverner and Grace Irving. A very good, bright copy with faint flecking to the front and rear boards and a small patch of rubbing ( ” x ½”) on the front design. Exceptionally scarce, especially so when bright.
