1 Butler, Samuel HUDIBRAS WRITTEN IN THE TIME OF THE LATE WARS. CORRECTED AND AMENDED WITH SEVERAL ADDITIONS AND ANNOTATIONS
London Printed by T. N. for Henry Herringman, and are to be sold by T. Baffet at the George in Fleet Street. 1684 First Thus Full calf Very Good
8vo (7" x 4"). 2 Vols. in 1. (Vol I: parts 1-2. Vol II: Part 3).Vol I: pp. [2], 221, [3], 223-412. Vol II: pp. [2], 254. Collation: Vol I: A-2C8. Vol II: A-Q8. Bound as a single volume in contemporary mottled calf with 4 raised bands on spine. Hudibras is a satirical poem about the anti-royalist factions in the English Civil War (16421651) that was begun during the war and published after the war in three parts: 1663, 1664 and 1678, and then as a collected edition in 1684.

Hudibras was the story of a knight errant of great religious fervor who was as stupid as he was arrogant and conceited, but who was praised in the poem for his discernment and logic nonetheless. As Butler's ridicule was aimed entirely at the parliamentarian side of the conflict, Hudibras was a great success when it was published since the Royalists won the conflict and Charles II was then King of England.

Very Good contemporary binding with spine extremities chipped; rubbing to corners; boards scuffed; hinges stressed, but binding holding well; text block fresh with contemporary ownership marks on rfep and scattered marginalia. ESTC R12308; ESTC R223861
