Green half-calf ruled in gold over black, tan and white marbled boards in the feather pattern.Spine has filigree rules in gold with two red morocco labels with titles in gold. t.e.g; marbled eps. Frontispiece and 181 vignette illustrations by Hugh Thomson, and includes a suppressed plate seen only in this edition on p. 95 that features a maid reading a hand-bill while seated on the back of man bending over. Original binding mounted and bound in rear. VG. Light shelf wear to edges and light rubbing to front joint; bookplate of Georgiana Erdmann and personal library slip tipped in; paperclip mark where accompanying ephemera attached. A lovely copy with an interesting history. Spielmann and Jerrold 5; Balston 3; Rogerson 3; Layard 173. WITH TLS from Duttons, Inc. Dated March 28, 1933 to Mrs. Erdmann regarding a query about the binding of this copy of the "Vicar" - Mrs. Erdmann evidently had requested a Kellogram [Kelliegram] binding from Kelly & Sons, London featuring the suppressed plate from p.95. Duttons found that a Kelliegram cover featuring the supressed plate was no longer available, and offered her samples of other Kelliegram bindings (see below). VG. Letter signed by D.E. Grant of Duttons. Letter torn in half lengthways, repaired with archival tissue on back. WITH two rubbings and a photograph of other Kelliegram bindings made for "Vicar" as alternatives to the suppresed plate binding as samples to accompany the letter.
