1 C. 3. 3. (Wilde, Oscar) THE BALLAD OF READING GAOL by C. 3. 3.
New York Brentano's 1909 Early American edition Paper covered boards Good
16mo (6.25” x 3.9”) pp.39. Light blue-green paper covered boards with white paper label on front cover and spine printed with titles in black; front label bordered in red. Title page printed in black and red. No dust jacket as issued. Overall a good, tight copy of this later American release. Wilde’s dark poem about the brutality and inhumanity of prison life had at its focus the execution of another prisoner for the premeditated murder of his wife. This book, like most early releases of The Ballad of Reading Gaol, was not published under Wilde’s name, which was infamous at the time and might have reduced sales, so it was published under a pseudonym derived from his prison identification number: block C, landing 3, cell 3.
