1 [Cruickshank, George]; À Beckett, Gilbert Abbot THE COMIC BLACKSTONE.
London Bradbury, Evans, & Co. 1872 Full tree calf Near fine George Cruickshank
16mo. (6 ½” x 4 ”). pp. xii; 252. Title page woodcut vignette and tail-piece woodcut both by Cruikshank; full tree calf with floral weave gilt borders on both boards and all board edges worked in pointillé; densely worked spine with 6 compartments separated by gilt fillets and rope-work; red morocco label with titles in gilt; remaining compartments decorated with gilt fleurons and Rococo filigree; two Greek-key borders at the foot of spine and lotus pattern at head and foot of spine; end-papers and all edges marbled in “Antique-Straight” pattern. Near Fine condition with faint wear to joints. Originally published in the English weekly magazine, Punch, between 1844 and 1846, The Comic Blackstone parodies the elementary principles English Common Law set forth by Blackstone to deliver a laugh for those interested in this cornerstone of the English and American legal systems: “A husband and wife are one in law — though there is often anything but unity in other matters.” “Children owe their parent support; but this is a mutual obligation, for they must support each other — though we sometimes hear them declaring each other wholly unsupportable.” A unique gift for the Lawyer in your life.
