London John Murray 1841 First Thus Very Good + Jones, Owen and others
4to (9½” x 7½”). unpaginated. Original publisher's red morocco by Owen Jones (unsigned) gold stamped on front board with titles in a central panel with multiple decorative rules surropunded by filigree work and blind stamped strap work in the Spanish Muslim tradition; rear board gold stamped with a large central lozenge and spine gold stamped with titles and arabesque openwork; decorated endpapers; a.e.g. Includes title page and three sectional titles illuminated using color lithography, 6 tinted wood engraved plates, wood engraved textual vignette and either chromolithographic, wood-engraved or color typographic borders on every page. The illuminated pages "recall early-Renaissance manuscript books and prefigures the private press books of William Morris and others in the 1890s." (Reithmayr). This sumptuous gift book was the first to be completely conceived and developed by a designer, and also thought to be the first published book containing images produced using chromolithography. This book is also the first where a book designer is given full credit on the title page. Owen Jones is best known for his influential book, The Grammar of Ornament (1856), a compenduium of design and color theory still in use today, and it is thought that his work on Ancient Spanish Ballads was the first published manifisatation of his color and design theories prior to the publication of The Grammar of Ornament. Some darkening and small marks to the spine; light soiling to the front and rear boards, o/w a lovely copy with the scarce original publisher's binding designed by Owen Jones and executed at a time when gilt stamping on bindings was still in its infancy. Gordon Ray 226; Andrea Reithmayr, Owen Jones’ ‘Book Beautiful’ (libraryasincubatorproject); Diego Saglia, Translating Romances, Writing Spain: John Gibson Lockhart’s Ancient Spanish Ballads; Nicholas Frankel, The Designer’s Eye: Ancient Spanish Ballads, Poetry, and the Rise of Decorative Design.
