Each volume contains an engraved frontis. with tissue guard, an engraved fly title as well as fold out facsimiles of letters and multiple portraits by Clarkson Stanfield engraved by Edward Finden. Reprint of the 1872 Bell and Daldy edition which was based on the 1836 Wright edition published by Murray that contains a supplementary collection of contemporary anecdotes concerning Johnson by John Wright titled “Johnsoniana” in Volumes 9 and 10. Bell & Son also released a 5 volume set of this edition in 1882 which is still widely available, but this 10 volume set is quite scarce. A beautiful, fresh, unread set. John Wilson Croker (1780 - 1857) was a British Tory politician and prolific author active in the late 18th C. and early 19th C. His edition of Boswell’s Life of Johnson was considered his best work and saw great popularity when published. The work drew sharp criticism from Croker’s political adversary, Thomas Macaulay, in an influential and much published review that was itself criticized for its contempt of Croker and of Boswell himself. Near fine copy of this scarce edition with faint rubbing to the top and bottom edges.
