First released in 1891 under the title “Under the Trees and Elsewhere”, the text by Mabie was re-released with these illustrations as this first edition in 1902 renamed Under the Trees. Under the Trees is a series of essays on man (in the inclusive sense) and his/her relationship to nature though the seasons. In this book, Mabie, one of the first ecocritics, takes us on rambles through the woods and meadows and shows that our culture and even language is bound up with nature. Charles Louis Hinton (1869 - 1950) studied at the National Academy of Design in New York, as well as the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was an instructor and dean at the National Academy of Design’s School of Fine Arts.
