TRIUMPHS OF TEMPER A POEM, [Early American Imprints; Women's Studies; Anderson, Alexander (illustrations)]; Hayley, William
1 [Early American Imprints; Women's Studies; Anderson, Alexander (illustrations)]; Hayley, William TRIUMPHS OF TEMPER A POEM
New York T. B. Jansen 1806 First Edition Full calf good
12mo (4" x 6"). pp.162. First American editon with Alexander Anderson engravings. Early American tree calf binding with black morocco spine label and gilt decorations on spine. Includes full page wood engraved frontis. and 4 additional full page wood engraved illustrations by Alexander Anderson (17751870), considered the father of wood engraving in America, and often called "The American Bewick". Beautiful and evocative illustrations after wood engravings by Anderson, who was the first skilled relief engraver in America, and the first to engrave on end-grain boxwood, forging a path in illustrative techniques that many later 19th C. American illustrators would enulate.

Triumphs of Temper was first published in England in 1781, and was one of the best selling poems of its time. Hayley's simple theme for the poem is that if a girl wants a good husband, she needs to have a good temper. Hayley's poem is important in the study of women's history in that it "marks the move from the view that woman is a softer (and so weaker and more malliable) man to the view that woman is made of something quite different from man and something that is potentially better" (Matthews).

A scarce early American imprint in good condition with a detached front board, dry, flaking leather on the spine, heavy rubbing to the corners with foxing on the prelims and scattered throughout the text. The foxing does not affect any of the illustrations.
