1 [Robinson, F. Cayley (binding design, endpapers, illustrations)]; Maeterlinck, Maurice; De Mattos, Alexander Teixeira THE BLUE BIRD A FAIRY PLAY IN SIX ACTS
London Methuen & Co. 1912 cloth Very good + Robinson, F. Cayley (binding design, endpapers, illustrations)
Crown 4to (7 x 10). pp. 211. An unsigned binding design of flying blue birds in gold on blue cloth by Frederick Cayley Robinson, who also designed the endpapers and created the drawings for the 25 color plates (tipped onto tan art paper). t.e.g. deckle edges. Maeterlinck's Symbolist play about a young wood cutter's son on a journey towards an understanding of human happiness.

F. Cayley Robinson created the set and stage designs for the English premiere of the play at the Haymarket Theatre in London in 1908. His experience in designing for the theater informed his subsequent illustrations, endpapers and binding design for this illustrated reissue of the play, first released in 1911 after Methuen issued more than 20 editions of the play. This early reissue of the illustrated edition was released in October 1912, a year following its first release.

A beautiful copy of Robinson's Symbolist masterpiece with several instances of offsetting between the art paper (not affecting the illustrations) and the following page, and light rubbing to the gilt on the front board. Scarce in this binding and in this condition.
