1 [Bradley, William H. (binding and title page design); Lemaire, Madeleine (water color illustrations); Rogers, C. McCormick (line illustrations)]; Meredith, Owen (Edward Robert Bulwer-Lytton) LUCILE
New York Frederick A. Stokes Company 1897 First cloth Very good + Will H. Bradley
Thick 8vo (5 1/8" x 8 3/8"). pp. 832. Signed binding design by Will Bradley of a repeated pattern of lilies and English roses in two colors of textured gold on periwinkle cloth, with the primary decorative motif repeated in gold on the spine. Unsigned title page design also by Will Bradley. Includes twelve facsimiles of water colors by Madeleine Lemaire and 100 black and white drawings by C. McCormick Rogers. t.e.g. A romantic narrative poem whose heroine, Lucile, is beloved by an English Lord and a French Duke who are bitter rivals. She loves the English Lord, but a misunderstanding keeps them apart. Many years later, the son of the Lord and the daughter of the Duke fall in love, but are separated by the old feud. They are finally reunited through the efforts of Lucile, who has become a nun named Sister Seraphine. Bradley represented the primary conflict of the poem in his binding by using an alternating design the English rose and the French lily. Stokes released this particular edition of Lucile in two different bindings, with the Bradley binding being the more scarce and difficult to obtain. Bambace A28. A very good + copy with slight fading to the spine cloth that does not affect the gilt design and a neat ownership statement written in ball-point pen on the ffep. Scarce in any condition.
