4to (8½" x 11"). pp. 399. Limited edition; this being number 423 of 900 copies bound in linen and printed by A. Wohlfeld in Magdeburg, Germany. Binding design lithographed in color after Lautrec. A brief biography and critical interpretations of the renowned post-Impressionist artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who gained fame for his depictions of French fin de siècle urban life. Text in German.

This work includes 157 black and white reproductions of Lautrec's work in the text and 7 color illustrations after works by Lautrec -- including 3 full page reproductions on art paper with captioned tissue guards of Lautrec's works La Goulue (1895); La Toilette (from his collection of prints entitled Elle in 1896) and May Belfort (1895). A lovely, bright copy with light sunning to the spine and small chips to the cloth at the head and tail. Scarce.

Signed Margaret Armstrong binding design of a flowering topiary with a banner winding around its stem inside a decorated border in pale green and silver on brown linen weave cloth. The second of two bindings Miss Armstrong created for the editions of this book. Includes 152 black and white illustrations (52 new illustrations over the previous edition) by Marion Satterlee. A description of more than 450 varieties of wild flowers, classified by color. A lovely copy of a structured but simultaneously fluid Armstrong binding design whose silver elements immediately draw the eye.

Light soiling to the edges and occasional finger soiling to the text. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt re-released this book (retaining the Armstrong cover) in 1989. GE 70; Minsky I:80. Scarce in this binding and in this condition.

Blue cloth clamshell box with leather spine label. Two blue ribbon markers; t.e.g. An extraordinary facsimile of the Kelmscott Press' masterpiece, and what many consider the most beautiful of all printed books.

As noted in the colophon: "The facsimile of the Kelmscott Chaucer has been printed for the Folio Society, London by Cambridge University Press and completed on the 20th day of February, 2002. The paper, Oxenford twin-wire laid, has been especially made at the James Cropper Mill at Burneside in Cumbria and supplied by John Purcell Paper. The binding design has been redrawn by David Eccles from a copy of the Kelmscott Chaucer bound by T.J. Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery in 1900. The binding of this edition has been executed by Smith Settle at Otley, Yorkshire, in full Nigerian goatskin, with handmade laid endpapers from the Fabriano Mill, Italy." A leaflet on the care of the binding and the pamphlet, The Kelmscott Chaucer: An Essay by William S. Peterson laid in.

A spectacular copy with a small and shallow slit (1/4") in the leather near the top edge of the front board.
