2 Thomson, Hugh HUGH THOMSON'S ILLUSTRATED FAIRY BOOKS JACK THE GIANT KILLER
London Macmillan & Co. Limited 1898 First Edition Softcover Hugh Thomson
4to. (6 x 8). pp. 32. No pagination. Pictoral chromolithographic paper wrappers, 16 full page color illustrations and 16 pages of line vignettes by Hugh Thomson. This was the first and only issue of Hugh Thomson's Illustrated Fairy Book series, since at the time of publication, the illustrations were thought to be too realistically gruesome by adults purchasing the book for children. As this booklet was targeted to young children, very few survived to the present day, making this booklet, one of the most scarce of Thomson's oeuvre. Wrapper is chipped with small areas of loss on both rear and front covers, otherwise VG. A bright and tight copy of this scarce Thomson production. Spielmann and Jerrold 25. This particular copy belonged to Eileen Winifred Clarke Pitman (1900 - 2009) of Doynton House, South Gloucestershire, England. An interview with Ms. Pitman at the age of 106 can be found online at: http://www.gazetteseries.co.uk/news/1064890.eileen_106_looks_back_through_eventful_century/
