Unsigned art nouveau publisher's binding in grey,vertically ribbed cloth with titles in gold and green within cartouches formed from two parallel orange trees in gold, orange and green; decorative orange tree design repeated on spine with titles in gold. t.e.g. With 40 duogravures from photographs and 16 color illustrations reproduced from paintings by Califorina artists including Percy Grey, John Marshall Gamble and Mary DeNeale Morgan. Folding map of California's principle automobile roads bound in rear. A chatty descritpion of California by a motorist who chose to take routes that were difficult for the average motorist so that he could describe the charm of the more remote regions of the state. Very Good with sun darkening to spine, faint shelfwear, light foxing to front edge and tissue guards.

8vo (5" x 7"). pp. 142. Signed Arts & Crafts binding design of a planet and a galaxy within a horizontal panel across the top of the front board, and titles above and below the panel all in silver. A book of lyric poetry whose title poem conveys Sterling's sense of wonder and awe at the vastness of the cosmos. Initially published by published by W. E. Wood in 1903, and released as a second edition in 1904 by A. M. Robertson. Robertson issued the book again in 1907 as the majority of the second edition was destroyed in the fire that followed the San Francisco earthquake in April,1906.

A handsome copy of a striking Arts & Crafts cover design whose lettering shows possible influence from Sarah Wyman Whitman (note the high-wasted sans-serif lettering and the roman "U" in "SUNS"). Scarce with this design in this condition.

Includes head and tail pieces and ornamental initials, in addition to the bright, hand colored pull out maps. Note the odd pagination which also appears in the 14th edition (1735). A striking and bright copy of this extremely popular work first published in 1693 for the children of English gentry, includes neat, contemporary marginalia on pp.13 -14 and 43.

The importance of this work is in its early descriptions of the English colonies and its map of North America, showing California as an island separated from the mainland by the "Red Sea" and described in the text as a "dry, barren and cold country".
