12mo. (6.75“ x 4.0“); pp. x, 624. [1, advertisements]. Unsigned binding design by Frederic W. Goudy. "Decorations and types used in the book specially designed by Frederic W. Goudy" stated on the verso of title. Mahogany leather publisher’s binding stamped in gilt on both cover and spine with floral design by Goudy. Maroon endpapers embossed with lions rampant matching those embossed on dust jacket; t.e.g. A bright example of Goudy’s skill in typography and design in VG- condition. Bookplate affixed to front paste-down; neat gift inscription on flyleaf. Head of spine lacking with some chipping to top edges. Scarce DJ in good- condition repeats Goudy’s title page design in purple on embossed paper. Frederic Goudy (1865-1947) was one of the most prolific type designers in the United States, with over 100 typeface designs to his credit and is ranked alongside Theodore Low De Vinne and Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue in his importance to typography and book design.
